1 Open the PDF and Display the Bookmark Panel
Launch your desktop PDF editor and open the document. Open the bookmark panel — usually a tab in the left sidebar labeled 'Bookmarks' or 'Outline'. If the document has no bookmarks, the panel will be empty. If it has bookmarks, they appear as a tree structure.

5 Save and Test Navigation
Save the file. Open it in a different PDF reader and test every bookmark — click each one and verify it navigates to the correct section. Check that the hierarchy displays correctly (expanded/collapsed states) and that nested bookmarks are properly indented under their parents.

Annotating PDFs: Common Questions, Answered
How do I auto-generate bookmarks from the document's headings?
In a desktop editor, use the 'Auto-generate Bookmarks' or 'Create Bookmarks from Text' function. The editor analyzes text on each page, identifies headings by font size (larger text is treated as higher-level headings), and creates a bookmark tree. Review the generated bookmarks — some non-heading text may be incorrectly identified as a heading. Adjust the font size thresholds if needed.
Why do my bookmarks point to the wrong pages after I reorganized the document?
Page operations (reorder, delete, insert) change the physical page positions, but bookmark destinations may not update automatically in all editors. In a desktop editor, bookmark destinations are typically updated during page operations. If they are not, manually edit each bookmark's destination page number. Always verify bookmarks after any page reorganization.
Can I create nested bookmarks for a multi-level document?
