Why Desktop Editors Provide Better Image Editing

Desktop PDF editors extract images at full resolution for editing, support replacement and repositioning while maintaining exact dimensions and DPI, and offer basic adjustment tools (brightness, contrast, saturation) within the PDF editor. For advanced edits, desktop editors can send the extracted image to an external image editor (Photoshop, GIMP) and re-import it automatically in-place.

Online tools typically cannot extract or replace embedded images — they can only add new image overlays on top of the page, which do not integrate with the existing content. How do I replace an image in a PDF without changing its size or position?

If the new image has a different aspect ratio, the editor typically stretches or crops it to fit — for best results, use a replacement image with the same aspect ratio and similar DPI as the original.

Can I extract an image from a PDF for external editing?
